The holiday season is a time of brightness, joy, and togetherness for many Americans– but it can be painful too. Especially in the case of seniors, the holiday season can remind them of those they’ve lost throughout the year and old holiday traditions that have come and gone. This can inspire deep feelings of loneliness in older adults.
Overcoming loneliness at the holidays for seniors can feel like an impossible feat at times– even more so if you live alone. However, it is important to acknowledge that it is normal, natural, and acceptable to feel this way. Then, you’re able to take the necessary steps to move past it.
Communicate with friends and family members
Just because you live at a distance from your loved ones, it doesn’t mean that you can’t stay in touch with them. Reaching out to those you are close with— even if it’s just via text, social media, or a phone call– can help ease the sense of loneliness. Share fond memories of the good times, and set plans to make new memories. Having something to look forward to will do wonders for both of you.
You should also use this time to express how you’re feeling. Sometimes, just having someone to express your concerns to can make a world of difference to your overall mental health.
Enjoy the holiday spirit
The bright lights and seasonal cheer may help lift your spirits. Decorate your home, make Christmas cookies, or partake in other holiday activities that bring you joy.
In addition, you should make an effort to get out and about in your community to take in the sights and sounds of the season. This could be as simple as taking a walk around your neighborhood to look at Christmas lights or attending a local holiday concert or play. If you don’t celebrate Christmas, there are winter festivals and celebrations for Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s Eve happening all across the country.
Create new holiday traditions
The best way to create a feeling of wonder for the holiday season is to start brand-new traditions. If you live alone, this could be something as simple as going out for a festive dinner or cooking a holiday meal for yourself. You could also invite friends over to celebrate with you, or volunteer at a local soup kitchen or nursing home.
For those who have family nearby, start a new tradition together! This could be something as small as gathering to decorate the home or going on a walk to look at holiday lights.
